After School Club Ballymena | Ladybirds ASC, Seven Towers

If you're a working parent in Ballymena, you already know the shape of the problem. The school day ends at two. Your working day doesn't. Somewhere in between sits your wee one, and the question of who collects them, where they go, and whether they'll actually enjoy being there.

Ladybirds After School Club has been answering that question for Ballymena families for over ten years. We run from Seven Towers Leisure Centre, Monday to Friday, 2pm to 6pm during term time, and we collect from eight local primary schools.

Here's what that actually looks like day to day.

We collect your child from school

You don't need to leave work early or arrange a chain of favours. Our staff collect children directly from the school gate and bring them safely to the club. We currently collect from Ballykeel, Carnaughts, St Brigid's, Broughshane, Braidside Integrated, Camphill, Diamond and Gracehill primary schools.

For most families this is the single biggest thing we take off their plate. The 2pm scramble disappears.

They arrive somewhere that feels like home from home

Ladybirds isn't a holding pen. Children come in, hang up their coats, and settle into a space that's theirs. There's a snack waiting. There are friends they've made across different schools. There's noise and laughter and the general good chaos of a room full of children who are glad the school day is over.

That "home from home" feeling isn't an accident. It comes from a small, consistent, qualified staff team who know every child by name, know which ones need a quiet ten minutes before they'll talk, and know who's had a rough day.

Homework gets done before you get home

This is the one parents tell us they didn't realise they needed until they had it. There's a settled period each afternoon where children can get their homework done with an adult nearby to help. Not doing it for them, but sitting alongside, answering questions, keeping them on track.

It means the evening at home can just be the evening at home. Dinner, bath, bed, a bit of peace. No 8pm negotiation over a reading book.

Then they play

The rest of the afternoon is theirs. Games, arts and crafts, gaming, group activities, running about, or occasionally just flopping on a beanbag with a book. Children who've sat still and concentrated all day need to move and choose and be a bit silly.

Play isn't the filler between the useful bits. For a primary-age child, it's where confidence is built, friendships are made, and social skills get practised for real.

Our team

The club is led by our manager Janis, with Sarah as deputy manager. Hazel has been part of the Ladybirds team for years and is one of those staff members children go straight to. Every member of our team is childcare qualified, and we're registered and inspected under the Trust's early years registration and inspection framework.

Small team, familiar faces, no revolving door of agency staff. Children thrive on knowing who's going to be there.

What it costs and how booking works

We offer regular weekly places and more flexible arrangements depending on availability. Because we're a small setting with a set daily capacity, places for popular days do fill up, particularly around September.

School holidays too

When the schools close, Ladybirds stays open. Our holiday club runs 8am to 6pm across the school holidays, including our full Summer Scheme through July and August. Same team, same familiar faces, longer days and a whole programme of activities, trips and messing about.

That means one childcare arrangement that works all year, rather than scrambling every half term.

Why Ladybirds

Plenty of settings will keep your child safe until you finish work. That's the floor, not the ceiling.

What we hear back from parents is that their child comes home more confident, with a wider circle of friends, and with the day's homework done. Children who were shy in P1 are running the show by P4. Children from eight different schools who'd never otherwise meet end up as best friends.
