How to Choose an After School Club in Ballymena: 10 Questions

Choosing who looks after your child for twenty hours a week is a serious decision, and most parents make it based on a phone call and a gut feeling.

Here are the ten questions worth asking any after school club in Ballymena, and what a good answer sounds like.

1. Are you registered and inspected?

After school clubs in Northern Ireland operating for children under twelve should be registered with the Trust's early years registration and inspection team. Ask directly. A club with nothing to hide will tell you straight away and be happy to talk about their last inspection.

2. What qualifications do your staff hold?

Ask what the staff team actually holds, and who is in charge day to day. There should be a qualified, named person in charge on site whenever children are present. Ask who that is by name.

3. Do you collect from my child's school?

Sounds obvious, but check the specific school and check who does the collecting and how children are signed in and out at both ends. Ask what happens if your child isn't at the gate.

4. What are the staff-to-child ratios?

Ask what the ratio is and how many children are typically in on a given day. Also ask about capacity, because a club running consistently at maximum feels very different from one with room to breathe.

5. How long have your staff been here?

This one tells you more than almost any other question. High turnover is the biggest red flag in childcare. Children need familiar adults. If the same faces have been there for years, that's a setting people want to work in.

6. What does a typical afternoon look like?

Listen for structure and for freedom. You want snack, some homework support, and then genuine child-led play. Be wary of an afternoon that's either rigidly timetabled or entirely unstructured.

7. Is homework support included?

Ask whether there's a dedicated homework period and whether staff sit with the children. It's one of the biggest practical benefits of a good club and not all of them offer it.

8. What's provided in terms of food?

Ask what the snack is and whether allergies and dietary requirements are managed properly. Children are ravenous at 2pm.

9. What happens in the school holidays?

If you need holiday cover, ask now rather than in June. Find out the hours, whether places are guaranteed for existing families, and how the summer scheme works. Holiday provision usually runs longer days, often 8am to 6pm.

10. Can we visit before we decide?

Any club worth choosing will say yes without hesitation, and will be relaxed about you coming when the children are actually there. Bring your child. Watch how the staff talk to the children and, more tellingly, how the children behave around the staff.

What we'd want you to see at Ladybirds

We've been running in Ballymena for over ten years from Seven Towers Leisure Centre. Janis manages the club, Sarah is deputy, Hazel has been with us a long time, and our whole team is childcare qualified. We're registered and inspected under the Trust's early years framework.

We collect from eight local primaries, we do snack and homework and a proper afternoon of play, and we're open 8am to 6pm through the school holidays.

But we'd much rather you came and made your own mind up. Ring us, come in some afternoon when the room is full and loud, and see whether it feels right for your wee one.
