Choosing an After School Club in Ballymena: A Parent’s Checklist (Plus How Ladybirds Measures Up)

Picking childcare for your child isn’t a decision to rush — and with so many things to weigh up, it helps to have a simple checklist. Whether you’re considering Ladybirds or comparing your options across Ballymena, here’s what we’d suggest every parent ask.
1. Does it collect from my child’s school?
This sounds basic, but it’s the first hurdle. Ladybirds collects directly from Ballykeel, Carnaughts, St Brigid’s, Broughshane, Braidside Integrated, Camphill, Diamond and Gracehill Primary Schools. If your child attends one of these, our pickup already covers you — no extra arrangements needed on your end.
2. Is the setting properly registered and inspected?
Childcare providers in Northern Ireland are registered and inspected under RQIA and the relevant Trust, following the Minimum Standards for Childminding and Day Care for Children Under Age 12. Ladybirds is fully registered, and we’re proud to say we passed our most recent unannounced Trust inspection with flying colours. Don’t be afraid to ask any provider about their registration and inspection history — it’s a fair and important question.
3. Are staff properly qualified?
Ask about staff qualifications, particularly whether there’s always a Level 5 Diploma holder — the qualification the Trust requires for the approved person in charge — on site. This isn’t a small detail; it’s central to safe, high-quality childcare.
4. What do the children actually do?
This is where a lot of childcare options fall short — a room with a telly and some worksheets isn’t the same as a genuine programme of activities. At Ladybirds, children get arts and crafts, sport and games, themed days and weeks, and space for both energetic play and quiet downtime. It’s activity-led, not just supervision.
5. What happens in the school holidays?
Term time is only part of the picture. Ask what happens for the six or seven weeks of summer, plus Halloween, Christmas and Easter breaks. Our Summer Scheme runs 8am–6pm right across the holidays, with trips out and themed weeks, so parents aren’t left scrambling to cover the gaps.
6. Is there flexibility and fair pricing?
Look for options that suit your family — full week or occasional days, sibling discounts, and clear pricing with no surprises. Our Summer Scheme, for example, offers full day, half day and full week rates, with a 10% sibling discount.
7. Does my child actually enjoy it?
Perhaps the most important question of all. The best way to answer it is to ask your child directly once they’ve settled in — or better yet, come and see us for yourself.
