Starting P1 in Ballymena? How After School Club Helps Your Wee One Settle

Your child starts P1 in September. Somewhere between the uniform shopping and the name labels, a quieter worry usually turns up. Will they be alright? Will they make friends? And, if you're working, who's collecting them at two o'clock?

P1 is a genuinely big transition. Here's how an after school club helps rather than adds to it.

The school day is exhausting for a P1

Most parents are surprised by how wrecked their child is in those first weeks. Full days, new rules, new faces, sitting still, listening, holding it together. Many children hold it together beautifully all day and then fall apart at the school gate.

What a P1 needs at two o'clock is food, familiar adults, and permission to stop performing. That's essentially what after school club is.

A smaller, calmer group

A P1 classroom can have thirty children in it. Our club is a smaller setting with a familiar staff team, which for a new P1 is a much gentler environment to land in.

Younger children get looked after by the older ones too. There's something in a P6 taking a nervous P1 under their wing that does more for confidence than any adult intervention.

Friendships beyond the classroom

If your child hasn't clicked with anyone in their class yet, that can be a hard few weeks. Club gives them a second group, made up of children from eight different Ballymena primaries, where they get another go at finding their people.

We collect from Ballykeel, Carnaughts, St Brigid's, Broughshane, Braidside Integrated, Camphill, Diamond and Gracehill.

Homework habits from the very start

P1 homework is small — a reading book, a few sounds, a bit of number work. But the habit of sitting down and getting it done is worth establishing early, and it's far easier done at club with support than at home at seven o'clock with a tired child and a tired parent.

Free P1 settling-in sessions in our feeder schools

We run free 60-minute settling-in sessions in local primary schools during September and October, designed to support new P1 children as they find their feet. The sessions are play-based and cover personal development and mutual understanding, language and communication, early numeracy and, above all, confidence.

If you'd like to know whether we're running a session at your child's school, get in touch.

Practical things for working parents

  • We collect your child directly from school, so there's no 2pm gap to fill

  • Open until 6pm, so there's no rush from work

  • Snack provided

  • School holiday cover 8am–6pm, including our full Summer Scheme

  • All staff childcare qualified, registered and inspected under the Trust's early years framework

One arrangement that covers term time and holidays, rather than a fresh crisis every half term.

Places for September

September is our busiest intake and P1 places do go. If you're planning ahead for the new school year, come and talk to us early.

Bring your wee one along for a look around. Meeting Janis and the team before September, and seeing the space, takes a surprising amount of the fear out of it for a child.
